Description
"Paro" is a seal-type therapeutic robot. It was developed for use by people who cannot keep pets or at facilities where animal-assisted therapy cannot be readily adopted. Unlike real dogs, cats and other animals that people are familiar with, a seal was chosen for Paro because they are not very well known to people, and the robot cannot be compared with a real seal. That makes it easier for people to accept the robot.
It has been confirmed through research and verification at many nursing care facilities and pediatric wards that robot-assisted therapy using Paro has the same effect as animal-assisted therapy.
